A day at Berry Island

Our sample itineraries are adapted to our guests’s interests, the weather, sea conditions and other variables at play in our remote wilderness area. On Berry Island, Mother Nature is the boss and we move according to her rhythms and schedules. We work hard everyday to provide all of our guests with A Bucket List Experience

  • Day 1

Embark on a scenic 30-minute water taxi ride from Alder Bay at 12:30 pm, cruising through the stunning waters of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound as you make your way to Farewell Harbour. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by our friendly staff at the dock - relax, you're here!

After a light lunch and a brief welcome orientation, you'll have a chance to settle into your accommodations. Then it's time to set off on an exciting afternoon marine tour. You'll search for marine wildlife in the vibrant waters surrounding the lodge and return to the lodge by 4:30 pm, just in time to enjoy our '5 pm swim club'!

Your evening includes a delicious buffet dinner, a briefing on the next day's activities and a presentation by our knowledgeable guides on an aspect of the coastal environment they are passionate about.

    Day 2

After a delicious breakfast, meet on the dock for your full day bear viewing adventure to one of our prime viewing areas! Immerse yourself in the wild beauty of the Great Bear Rainforest as we explore the diverse ecosystems of these pristine shorelines and estuaries. Depending on the tide, you'll have the unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures either from a vessel, small zodiac or on foot, providing a truly intimate and breathtaking experience. We return to the lodge by 4:30 pm. Join fellow travellers around our fire tables to share stories of the day before dinner. Sit on the deck to watch the setting sun or listen to an engaging evening presentation by one of our guides before returning to your cozy room for a peaceful night’s rest, ready for another day of adventure.

    Day 3

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll head out to explore the Great Bear Rainforest and Broughton Archipelago. Today is a chance to tailor your day to your interests by choosing from a variety of half or full day adventures and experiences. You can choose from a marine tour, bear ecology tour, coastal safari adventure, sea kayaking, rainforest hike, Indigenous cultural tour, stand up paddle boarding, or our 'Berry Balm' nature wellness experience. The adventure is up to you!

    Day 4

After breakfast, there is time for a final morning excursion before your departure. You can choose from one of the following options:

    • A short morning sea kayak excursion in the protected and crystalline waters near Farewell Harbour Lodge

    • A marine mammal excursion

    • A guided interpretive rainforest or forest bathing walk

    • An Indigenous cultural site visit

    • Or soak in your last moments at a slower pace, relaxing around the lodge or on a self-guided walk on our Berry Loop Trail

After your morning activity, our water taxi returns you to Alder Bay around noon for ongoing connections.

  • Day 1

Depart Alder Bay at 12:30 pm aboard our water taxi for the scenic 30-minute service to Farewell Harbour. Greet Berry Island Lodge staff at the dock. Check in, receive welcome orientation and lunch. Relax, you’re here! After settling into accommodations, join an afternoon tour in search of marine wildlife in the waters of the famous Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound. Return to the lodge by 4:30 pm in time for the 5:00 pm swim club (optional). Buffet dinner, followed by next day activity briefing. Optional evening presentation or activity.

    Day 2

We are up early for your full day bear viewing adventure! Our bear excursions take us to one of several estuaries or rivers where we view either from a crew boat, small zodiac or on foot depending on the tide. Return by 4:30 pm; 5:00 pm in time for optional swim club and buffet dinner followed by optional evening presentation or activity.

    Day 3

After breakfast you’ll meet your guide crew on deck for an 8am departure on a ‘Coastal Safari’ - the first half day is dedicated for marine mammal viewing in search of Dolphins, Porpoises, Orca, Humpbacks and Sea Otters and perhaps even some black bears doing some early morning beach foraging. In the afternoon after lunch, we’ll get off the boat and into the magnificent Great Bear Rainforest for a walk amongst the giants. But don’t forget to look down! -  as the whole forest comes alive with hundreds of species of fungi, lichens, mosses and other plant species. Your guide will help you explore and appreciate the many wonders of a British Columbia rainforest.

    Day 4

Are you ready for another day of discovery? Today we’ll break the day up again into two half days. Our morning will get us out onto the calm waters around Farewell Harbour in tandem sea kayaks to glide silently along the shore using all of our senses to take in the environment around us - the smells of the rainforest air mixed with the brine of the intertidal, the sights of Great Blue Herons and other shorebirds foraging along the shore, the sounds of Humpback whales exhaling in the distance. In the afternoon, after lunch we’ll head out by small boat for a local crabbing/fishing expedition in our secret spots near the lodge. Come back to the lodge to have our Chef prepare your fresh seafood and show off your hunter/gatherer skills for fellow guests!

    Day 5

This day is dedicated to a deeper dive into the millennial old yet still living and vibrant culture of the Kwakwaka'wakw Indigenous peoples of this region (also called First Nations). We have 3 cultural sites to share with you today representing the past, present and future of this rich culture. The first site is called Tsatsisnukwomi, a village that was sadly vacated by the Indigenous inhabitants during a period of forced relocation in the 1960s but then proudly reclaimed in the early 1990s. It is the site of amazing traditional Big House which we can discover with the help of village elders. The second site is one of the most ancient village sites on the entire BC coast, called Mimkwamlis, dating back at least 10,000 years. The third site is a world class museum called U’Mista featuring a world famous collection of masks worn during ‘Potlatch’ ceremonies marking important events in their culture including the Hamatsa, or coming of age, ritual. Enroute to the museum located in a small Indigenous village on an island not far from the lodge, we often get side-tracked by marine wildlife!

    Day 6

We start the day off with a guided Forest Bathing session where we slow down and tap into our 5 senses for an experiential deep dive into the living, breathing forest. Using a series of meditative, invitations, we learn to see the forest in a whole new way. In the afternoon, after lunch, we move to our handcrafted, aromatic cedar lined wellness deck featuring a wood fired sauna, hot tub, fire table, deck chairs, stunning oceanfront views and Mother Nature’s perfect cool plunge pool - the Ocean! A special wellness day blending forest and ocean seamlessly.
