Whale Season - Sample Itinerary

Our sample itineraries are adapted to our guests length of stay, interests, time of year, the weather, sea conditions and other variables at play on our remote island. At Mounu, Mother Nature is the boss and we move according to her rhythms and schedules. We work hard everyday to provide all of our guests with A Bucket List Experience. 

In Tonga, Sundays are rest days. We don’t do any boat excursions on Sundays so our guests take it as a opportunity to relax and recharge.

  • *Below is a sample 7 day itinerary. Specific itinerary may vary based on day of arrival and length of stay, but please note that Sundays are always a rest day and we don’t go out with the whales on Sundays.

    Day 1 | Wednesday

    Arrival to vava'u airport. After customs and immigration, you’ll be greeted by our mounu staff for a quick transfer to the marina. At the marina, you’ll board a boat to take you on a 25 minutes boat ride to mounu island. Lunch and a brief orientation will be ready once you arrive and then you will have the rest of the afternoon and evening to get settled into your rooms and the island for the week!

    Day 2 - 3 | Thursday-Friday

    Early breakfast before your first morning on the water. We start early to get on the water and begin our search for the whales. We’ll spend the morning on the water and return for a nice, warm lunch back on the island for a late lunch. Guests usually take a nice warm shower, relax and offload the incredible photos and videos taken from the day with the whales. We enjoy a sunset bonfire and drinks before dinner.

    Day 4 | Saturday

    Same as day 2-3 plus a very special Saturday culture night.

    Day 5 | Sunday

    Sundays are a day of rest in Tonga. We take this opportunity to recharge and enjoy the island. You can enjoy a snorkel right off the beach, walk around the island, read a book or take a nap. We can also arrange for a boat ride to the nearby town if you’d like to attend church or explore (but note, most stores are closed!)

    Day 6 -7 | Monday-Tuesday

    Final days on the water with the whales. We also have the option to end our whale days at nearby swallows or mariners cave for some incredible snorkeling!

    Day 8 | Wednesday

    Enjoy breakfast before your departure to the Vava’u airport. Another 25 minute boat ride and transfer to the airport with enough time to check-in before your departing flight. Hopefully it’s not a goodbye, but a “see you later.”

    Enjoy a lovely breakfast before departing for the adventure of the day. Depending on water conditions we will take to the waters to snorkel and explore caves, reef, or spots where we often see manta rays. Scuba diving or Kite surfing lessons can also be had.

    Day 4 | Saturday

    Same as day 2-3 plus a very special Saturday culture night.

    Day 5 | Sunday

    Sundays are a day of rest in Tonga. We take this opportunity to recharge and enjoy the island.

    Day 6 -7 | Monday-Tuesday

    Choose your final adventure on the water or take it easy on the island relaxing.

    Day 8 | Wednesday

    Enjoy breakfast before your departure to the Vava’u airport. Another 25 minute boat ride and transfer to the airport with enough time to check-in before your departing flight. Hopefully it’s not a goodbye, but a “see you later.”
